The Senior Center is open to all area citizens age 55+
to visit for FREE

Monday through Friday   8:00 am to 3:15 pm

when there is inclement weather and the Saugus schools are closed,
the Saugus Senior Center will also be closed.

There is NO fee, NO application, NO registration required to visit the Senior Center.

Many of the events and activities are free to attend, some of them have a small fee.

Visitors are encouraged to come to the center and not be shy about utilizing the services
and activities because they aren't sure just how to perceive the concept of "Senior".   

You do NOT have to be a Saugus resident to use the center.

The Senior Center itself is basically a drop-in center. The staff will offer visitors a
Senior Center Card that is scanned when one enters the building and registers
information the Center uses for administrative purposes such as what activities are
being participated in, how many lunches are served, how many people have visited the
Center that day, etc.   You are NOT required to have a card to come to the Center.

You can drop into the Center any time that it is open, and even bring a friend or
two and play cards, have coffee, socialize, volunteer, etc.

Several senior groups such as the Senior Association, the Knitting Club,  
and the Quilters Guild hold their meetings and other events at the Senior Center.
These clubs may have registration and yearly membership dues.

The Center offers lunch Monday thru Friday at 11:30 am for a $2.00 donation.

A continental breakfast is offered Monday thru Friday from 8:30 to 10:00 am   $1.75

Thanks to Charlie Pinksten our Gift Shop has had a reformation. 
New curtains, new mirrored shelves,  and all around make-over. 
Many beautiful items are on consignment - Jewelry, Scarves, China,
Lenox, Vases, Pocket books, Pictures, Cards, something for everyone. 
So, come in and browse.     Our Gift Shop is open to the public.

The boutique is in need of “get well” & “sympathy" cards.
We are grateful for your continued wonderful support.

There are many ongoing activities at the Saugus Senior Center
Some of them are free and others have a small fee.

Some of the activities offered at the Saugus Senior Center are: 
Quilting, Line Dancing, Mah Jong, Cards & Chess, 
Yoga, Weight Lifting, Knit & Crochet, Exercise,
Bingo, Whist, Bible Study, Poker Game, and Oil Painting.


We now have a pool table at the center.  It was purchased with money
donated to the “Friends of the Saugus Senior Center” specifically for
this purpose.  It is located down the hall in our Day Care area.
Billiard playing is ongoing when the room is available.
Thank you to those who donated.

EXERCISE room is open Monday - Friday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm 
2 treadmills, 2 exercise bikes, a rowing machine, weights, & a 42” flat screen TV.

Thanks to a Grant through Greater Lynn Senior Services.
Come check it out!!!

There is no fee for use of this equipment.

To use these machines you must obtain a note from your doctor,
informing us that you are fit to use an exercise bike and a treadmill.
You must call for an appointment to be trained on machines before using.
You must sign in and have a staff member open the room for you.

We would like to “Thank” those who made donations to the
“Friends of the Saugus Senior Center” including the G.E. Gift Foundation
matching funds that were made to purchase this equipment.
And thanks to Greater Lynn Senior Services for the grant that purchased
a flat screen TV and rowing machine for the exercise room.

You can choose from French Toast, Bagel/Cream Cheese,
Cereal, or English Muffin. 
All come with fruit or juice and coffee.  All for only $1.75


Served Monday through Friday  at 11:30 am 
The suggested lunch donation is $2.00   However, no one will be refused lunch due
to inability to make a donation.  If you are not able to make a donation, please see
Joanne in the office, arrangements will be made for you to be served a lunch.  
We do ask that you scan your free membership card when signing up for lunch. 
This will give us an accurate count for our daily meals. 
If you do not have a membership card, please give the front desk your information
and a card will be assigned to you.


We need volunteers to help clean up and wash tables after our lunch program.

ATTENTION - Rules and Regulations
All food must be consumed on premises.
Congregate food is budgeted per person forecasted.
For example: please do not take extra milks; one meal per person.

The Saugus Senior Center offers rides for Saugus residents who are Senior Citizen’s
to come to the center for lunch Monday through Friday. 
$1.00 round trip

We offer trips to Stop & Shop or to the mall Thursday mornings only. 
$3.00 round trip

Medical rides to Saugus, Lynn, Lynnfield, Salem, Stoneham,
Melrose, Wakefield, and Peabody. 
$4.00 each way

We now have a new phone charging station located against the wall,
outside of the back offices.
This phone charging station will allow you to charge your cell phone
here at the Senior Center in the event that your phone battery dies or is getting low.
This charging station sponsored by Partners in Rehabilitation, LLC Physical Therapy,
880 Broadway, RT 1 North, in Saugus.


For seniors in need of a walker, wheelchair, canes, shower chair, transfer bench,

commode, etc., our Senior Center can provide the item on loan at no charge,

* * * CLARIFICATION Regarding The Saugus Senior Association * * * 
The Senior Association is a group of seniors that formed a club years ago, and
hold their monthly meetings at the Senior Center.  Members pay club dues.
There are NO dues to pay to be a member of the Saugus Senior Center.
So please do not be afraid to come into our Center, 
you are a member of the Senior Center the minute you walk through the door.

The Saugus Public Library is pleased to offer home delivery of library materials
to any Saugus resident who is unable to come to the library in person.
Whether the reason is short- or long- term the library is happy to provide you
with the books, DVDs, Books on CD or other materials that you need.
Simply call the Library at (781) 231 - 4168 ext. 11 to make arrangements.
The home delivery program is assisted by volunteers and new volunteers are
always welcome.  Please call the library if you’re interested in helping out.


Just a reminder that the library has reduced-admission passes available
for the Boston Science Museum, The Children's Museum in Boston,
and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. 
One pass for each day, available on a first-come, first-served basis. 
Please call if you're interested and you know what date you'd like to go.  
The Science and Children's museum passes are good for four people;  the MFA for 2.

Veterans and Veteran Family Members you may be eligible for financial assistance
through Chapter 115, a town program that provides a financial and medical
assistance for
fixed income veterans, spouses, and widows.
Qualifying veterans and their dependents receive financial assistance for food,
shelter, clothing, fuel, and medical care.

The next Veteran Mobile Food Market

The program provides nutritional supplements to our veteran community,
and is specially designed for veterans and their family members only.  
We require that you pick up from our distribution center at Saugus Senior Center,
If you cannot physically attend,
a friend or family member may pick up for you.

The program is specially designed for veterans and their family members only.
This market will take place on the third Wednesday of every month.

Learn how you can qualify for a NO COST Caption phone. 
Local ClearCaptions Representative, Becky Bushy, will be available to explain this
Federal Program that provides Caption Phone service to anyone who is hard of hearing
at NO COST. 
No income qualifications.  To qualify, you need to meet the following requirements. 
The person must have some type of hearing loss, a home phone number, and internet.


This will be no Pizza Party / Dance until April, 2018

SENIOR WHOLE HEALTH – Wednesday  February 28 from 9:30 to 11:00 am
Senior Whole Health is a free health insurance company that provides free coverage
to seniors who are 65+ and have MassHealth. A Senior Whole Health representative
will be here at the Senior Center to provide information.

You asked, and we listened.  You’re getting a new Medicare card!
Between April 2018 and April 2019, we’ll be removing Social Security numbers
from Medicare cards and mailing each person a new card.
 This will help keep
your information more secure and help protect your identity. 
You’ll get a new Medicare Number that’s unique to you, and it will only be
used for your Medicare coverage.
 The new card won’t change your coverage
or benefits.  You’ll get more info from Medicare when your new card is mailed.
Here’s how you can get ready:
          Make sure your mailing address is up to date.  If your address needs
             to be corrected, contact Social Security at  
or call 1-800-772-1213. TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778.
          Beware of anyone who contacts you about your new Medicare card.
             We’ll never ask you to give us personal or private information to get
             your new Medicare Number and card.
          Understand that mailing everyone a new card will take some time.
Your card might arrive at a different time than a friend’s or neighbor’s.

GLSS Continues Its Commitment
to Creating a “Dementia Friendly” Community in Saugus
The books and DVDs about caregiving, Alzheimer’s disease, and related
dementias are available at the Senior Center.  Anyone interested in borrowing
a book or DVD can sign it out in the back office.

Some diabetic supplies are covered under Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)
rather than Medicare Part D (Drug Plans).
  These include: blood sugar (glucose)
test strips and testing monitors, lancets and lancet devices, insulin pumps and
glucose control solutions for checking the accuracy of testing equipment and
test strips. These products are covered under Part B as durable medical equipment

and must be purchased with a doctor’s prescription from a Medicare-approved
supplier or pharmacy.  Not all pharmacies realize these supplies should be billed
to Medicare Part B.
Some pharmacies, especially those not part of a large retail chain, may not participate
in Medicare Part B and therefore cannot bill the purchases to Medicare Part B.
ask if your pharmacy participates in Medicare Part B before purchasing diabetes supplies.

contact your local SHINE program (781) 388-4845.

This federal fuel assistance program is open to all eligible resident households
of Lynn,   Lynnfield, Nahant, Saugus, Swampscott and Wakefield.  Eligibility is
based on family size and income of the entire household.  Tenants with heat
included in their rent may be eligible for benefits depending upon the household
income and are encouraged to apply.  (Households with heat included in their
rent and who are in public housing or private subsidized housing where rent is
limited to a low percentage of their income may not be eligible for fuel assistance
benefits but may be eligible for utility discounts.)

The Saugus Senior Center is in need of Movies that we can play here at
our Center on a weekly basis.  Every Friday at 12:30 pm a movie is played
and we are running out of desirable movies for our seniors. 
DVD’s would be greatly appreciated, but we also will accept VCR movies.

don’t give up just yet on experiencing this ancient healing practice.
Chair Yoga, in which you perform your entire yoga set while sitting

SENIOR KNITIZEN’S – Knit & Crochet Group Tuesdays  at 12:15 pm
In the past 15 years the group has grown rapidly. 
Thanks to all who come Tuesdays and volunteer your time and effort
by knitting and crocheting for our troops overseas.
This year, the group put in a total of 11,787 hours of their dedicated time to make
1300 Hats, 281 Slippers, 70 Gators, 96 Afghans, 14 Scarfs, and 266 Cool Ties
Thanks again for representing the Saugus Senior Center in such a special way.

If you like to paint and are looking to pick up that paint brush again,
join our Tuesday afternoon group.  Draw, paint, sketch whatever your
heart desires, while having friendly conversation and making new friends.

Tuesdays sing-a-long to piano playing led by Lourdes and Ben Lagman.

Starting the first week in February, Manicures by Joanie will take place.
We are pleased to announce that we will have a manicurist here on site
at the Saugus Senior Center for your convenience.

SEAMSTRESS – Wednesdays  from 10:00 to 11:00 am
Diane Maruzzi will be at the Center to perform alterations.

BINGO – Wednesdays at 1:00 pm   -   VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Saugus Senior Center is looking for Bingo Volunteers to help
with calling of numbers.   If you are interested in volunteering,
please stop by any Wednesday and ask for Carl Tedder.

Wednesday’s Bingo at the Saugus Senior Center starts at 12:45 pm ! 
No cards will be sold after 1:15 pm 

Because we have such a large crowd at our lunch program on Bingo day,
we are also looking for volunteers to help clean-up after lunch on Wednesdays.

PUBLIC HEALTH  NURSE at the Senior Center on Thursdays
Mary McKenzie, RN, EdM, MS, Saugus Board of Health nurse, has
permanently moved her office from Laurel Towers to the Senior Center. 
Mary will be here every Thursday to answer any questions you may have. 
She will perform blood pressure screenings
every 3rd Thursday 9:00 to 11:00 am

BIBLE STUDY -  Thursdays   10:00 to 11:00 am

NEW AT THE CENTER – ZUMBA GOLD -  Thursdays  from 4:00 to 5:00 pm
Join us every Thursday with certified Zumba instruction Susan Leach. 
ZUMBA GOLD - teaches the older adult who wants to join the fitness party
for the first time, includes Zumba Chair Workout.   Zumba Gold addresses the
anatomical, physiological and psychological needs specific to this population.
Class is one hour.
  Cost $10.00

NEW WEIGHT LIFTING CLASS  -  Fridays from 10:00 to 11:00 am
Valarie Costello will instruct a Weight Lifting Class
Cost is $5.00 per class.

FREE MOVIE DAY AT THE CENTER  - Fridays at 12:15 pm
Our movies are now played on a Big Screen with our new DVD / VCR Projector
that was bought with the generous donation of an anonymous donor to our
“Friends of the Senior Center”. Thank You anonymous donor!

If you have DVD movies that you would like to donate,
it would be greatly appreciated.

MULTIMEDIA ART CLASSES  -  Fridays from 12:30 to 3:00 pm
We are pleased to welcome Steve Grecco, Art Instructor, who will teach
beginners or advanced students a variety of techniques in drawing,
oil painting, acrylics, or pastels. Cost is $10.00 per class

ALL Trips will require payment at the time of sign up.
Refunds for all DAY trips will only be granted if cancelled at least five (5) days in advance.

You will be issued your seating assignment at the time you sign up for any trip.

A deposit for an overnight trip, and full payment for a day trip
must be made in order to receive issued seating.

The doors will open 1/2 hour before the bus is scheduled to arrive at our center.

Donations of $250.00 or more to the Saugus Senior Center will provide a beautifully
scripted leaf on the Tree of Life, showing the name of the person who makes the

If you disagree with a decision made by Medicare, you have the right to appeal. 
All steps in the appeal process have specific time frames and other requirements. 
It is very important to pay attention to the time limits for appeals!

Some appealable situations are:
Medicare denies your request for a health care service, supply, or prescription
Medicare denies payment for health care that you  have already received
Medicare stops covering services that you are receiving
Medicare pays a different amount than you believe it should

Lock Boxes - Allow access to your home in the event of an accident, sudden illness
or emergency call to your home.  A house key is stored in a small locked box that
is secured to your house in a discreet location; only Saugus Fire Department
personnel have access.

The File of Life is a red magnet pouch that is placed on your refrigerator with your
most updated medical information placed in it.  This provides police, firemen, and
EMS with essential information for securing the most accurate medical treatment
in the event of an emergency in your home.  First responders are aware to first
look on your refrigerator for this information.  File of Life magnets are available at
the Saugus Senior Center.  Please call Cheryl Roberto at (781) 231- 4180 for more
information, or help filling out or updating your file of life card.

Every property owner shall display the house number, as assigned by the Town
Assessor’s Office, using only numeric digits that are not less than four (4) inches tall.  
Affix numbers not less than four (4) feet and not more than five (5) feet above
the door sill.   The house numbers shall be in contrast with the color of the house. 
If the house sits 50 feet or more from the street or way, the number shall be affixed
to a post at a point at least 4 feet above ground level, at the entrance to the property.

Attention – Saugus Residents – The Importance of House Numbers
House numbers are not only convenient for finding addresses, but necessary for
emergency responders to locate those in need.  If the numbers on your house are
not visible or easy to read, it will take emergency personnel longer to reach you. 
Those extra minutes spent trying to locate a property can mean the difference
between life and death, so take the time now to be sure your house numbers are
able to be seen from the street to help emergency responders find you faster.

individuals at a cost of about $604 billion. The
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services (CMS)
estimated that improper payments, some of which may be
fraudulent, were almost $50 billion.   
Fraud, waste, and abuse contribute to rising
health care costs. Taxpayer dollars lost to fraud, waste, and abuse affect all of us.

You can help stop fraud and abuse by reviewing your Medicare statement
(Medicare Summary Notice – MSN) or Part D Explanation of Benefits (EOB) to
make sure Medicare is not charged for items or services you did not receive. 
If you have a concern regarding a Medicare claim, you should first discuss it
directly with your physician, provider, or supplier that provided the service.

(SMP), which is a group of trained volunteers who teach Medicare beneficiaries
how to protect their personal information, identify and report errors on their health

Thanks to a grant-funded kiosk at the Saugus Police Station, you can now
drop off prescription drugs you may not want 24 hours a day as well.
This provides residents with the proper way to dispose of prescription medications.
It prevents environmental pollution. The prescription drug disposal kiosk looks like
a street mailbox and is located just inside the doors of the Saugus Police Station.
Residents can drop off medications, medication samples, over-the-counter
medications, vitamins, syrups and ointments, inhalers.

If you are dropping off medications, please remove the label or
black-out the patient’s name to protect your personal information.

For those who want to drop-off “sharps” such as syringes,
there is a collection box across the street at Town Hall.

Do You Need a Ride?
THE RIDE application has changed. 
New or recertifying applications to the Ride must apply for or renew
their eligibility by appearing in person for an interview with a Mobility Coordinator,
located at 500 Rutherford Avenue, Boston (Charlestown) MA. 
You must call the Ride Eligibility Center (617) 337-2727 for an appointment.
Free Transportation will be provided to and from the interview
for the applicant and one other person.

(S.F.R.A.) and the Saugus TRIAD Program have initiated an
“Open Door Key Keeper” Program for residents of Saugus.

conditions, for emergency personnel to access your home in the event of an accident,
sudden illness or emergency call to your home.  This allows emergency personnel to enter
without having to force entry and do costly damage to your home.

is accessed by a master key entrusted to the Fire Department of Saugus.
This program is most helpful and recommended for the elderly, handicapped, or

Follow these 3 steps to be certain you have done all that you can to reduce
the cost of medications for you and your household.

STEP 1:  Make a list of all the medications you are taking; include
the retail price for each one and reason you are taking each one.

STEP 2:  Call or meet with your doctor and talk about each medication.
Make sure you still need all the medications that you are currently taking.
Discuss the use of other brand name drugs or generic drugs that may
cost less. At any time you should feel free to discuss cost-saving
alternatives to your medication regimen with your physician or pharmacist.

STEP 3:  Call the state’s pharmacy counseling program, “MassMedLine”
at 1-866-633-1617, to find out about less costly medication alternatives
or to get help enrolling in the best program for you.

MassMedLine will evaluate your situation and work with your doctor to
complete any applications necessary to obtain your medications.

Things to do in an emergency situation -

Information from a law enforcement official.
*  If a robber demands your wallet or purse, do not hand it to him. 
Toss it away from you.  Chances are that he is more interested in
the wallet than you and he will go after it.

*  If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a  car, kick out the back tail lights
and stick your arm out the holes and start waiving like crazy.  The driver
won’t see you, but everybody else will.  This has saved lives.

*  Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping and just sit -
doing their check books, checking their lists, etc.  Don’t do this! 
The predator may be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity
for him to get in on the passenger side.

*  Always take the elevator instead of the stairs.  Especially at night!
Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. 

*  If a predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! 
The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times, and even then,
it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ.  RUN, preferably in a “zig-zag pattern.

Courier Service Scam
You receive a phone call from a courier service. They ask if you will be home because
they have a package for you requiring a signature. They say the delivery will arrive in
roughly an hour. Sure enough, about an hour later, a uniformed delivery man turns up
with a beautiful basket of flowers and a bottle of wine. You inquire as to who the sender
was. The courier replies he doesn’t know, he only delivers the package and said that
a card would arrive separately. He tells you that because the gift contained alcohol,
there was a $3.50 delivery charge, and that the company requires payment to be
made by credit or debit card only, thus helping to keep a legal record of the transaction.
He said that couriers don’t carry cash. This sounds completely logical and you hand him
your debit card. He swipes the card on a small mobile card machine, and you are asked
to enter your PIN number and a receipt was printed out. All is good says the courier.
Be wary of accepting packages which you never ordered.

Beware of Phishing:  phishing seeks to obtain usernames, passwords, bank
and other financial accounts,
and credit card details for malicious reasons. 
Phishers pretend to be trustworthy via electronic email and text messages. 
Older and vulnerable adults can be subject to fraud and financial abuse.  
Phishers include links in their email to lure you to fake sites in order to steal
your log in credentials or to infect your computer with a virus.
Phishers may also ask you to respond to an email with sensitive personal
identification information that would allow them access your financial accounts. 
Before you click on a link or respond to an email check to make sure you are
familiar with the company or sender’s name.
  If not, delete the email or text!

Credit vs. Debit Cards:  
According to Frank Abagnale, fraud expert, the worst financial tool
out there are debit cards.  Did you know that you might be responsible for the first $50 of
fraudulent charges on your credit card, no matter how much gets fraudulently charged? 
But with a debit, you could be responsible for up to $500 unless you report the fraudulent
activity within two days.
  If you don’t spot the fraud for more than 60 days, you could be
responsible for the total amount fraudulently charged.  Some of the highest risk places to
use a debit card are gas stations, restaurants, retail stores and online, whichare popular
places for scammers to install “skimmers”.
  These devices read your card and allow the
scanners to clone your card to access your account.  If you are going to use your card for
a “big ticket” item, opt for a credit card.  Many credit card companies offer extra protection,
like extended warranties orprotection against theft, breakage or loss.  Plus, if you dispute
the charge, the credit card company may withhold payment until the dispute is cleared up. 
An alternative to using a debit card is to set aside a credit card that you designate for daily
expenses, the kind of expenses that you would otherwise use your debit card for.
  Pay the
balance monthly to avoid interest charges. 

A new telephone scam is being used to target victims and facilitate fraudulent charges.
The caller asks the victim, “Can you hear me?” and then records the consumer’s “yes” response
and obtains a voice signature.
 The signature can later be used by scammers to authorize
fraudulent charges over the phone, acting as the victim.  Scammers are always coming up with
new ways to target people and this is the latest method they are using to con victims.  
The best thing to do if you get a call from a number you don’t recognize is not to answer it.

In December 2016, police in a local town were called to a major department store.
The staff reported that a woman, who had purchased $3,000 in gift cards earlier in
the day, had returned to buy an additional $3,500 in gift cards.
 The woman told the
store clerk the cards were for a relative in the hospital.  The store called the local
police.  The police said later that the woman had received a call from a man claiming
to be her grandson, requesting $3,000 in gift cards for Christmas.  The generous
woman dutifully went to the department store, bought the gift cards as he requested
and provided the man the card’s serial numbers over the phone.
 The police advised
her not to buy any more gift cards for someone requesting them on the phone.  
She had been SCAMMED.

Have you received this phone call lately? “This is your final notice.
The IRS is filing a law suit against you if you do not pay them immediately”.
Saugus residents have been receiving this telephone call.  It is a SCAM!  
Do not fall prey to these people. The IRS will never phone or e-mail you!!
If you should receive such a call just hang up!!!

Protect your “PIN” by being aware of “shoulder surfers”.

Be suspicious of anyone lurking around an ATM or watching over your shoulder
while you use your card.  Some thieves even are putting a device over the
card slot of an ATM to read the magnetic strip and record your PIN.  
This is known as skimming.
If you suspect criminal activity walk away and use a different ATM.  
The same thing applies when using your debit card.  Stay ALERT
and always be AWARE of what is happening around you.

Phone call:  Person on the other end says they are the manufacturer
of your alarm system.  You respond by saying that you do not have an
alarm system.  This informs them that there is no alarm system at your
house and it would be an easy break-in.  Do not answer them… Hang up.

We have received notice that the MA Department of Public Utilities (DPU)
is warning customers/consumers about a phony “solar developer” scam. 

On your caller ID system, the caller will appear to be from the MA DPU
main phone number (617-305-3500)
The caller may inform you that you owe money to the DPU (or other entity)
this is a phone scam.  You are advised not to provide the caller with any
personal information and immediately HANG-UP.

You are encouraged to report the scam to the DPU’s Consumer Division
at (617) 737-2836 or call toll free 1 (877) 886-5066

Some people leave their cars in long-term parking while away.
The possibility exists that someone could break into it. This happened recently.
The thieves used the information on the car’s registration which was in the glove
compartment.  They drove the car to the owner’s home and robbed it!
If you are going to use long-term parking do NOT leave the registration/insurance
cards in it.  Also, remove your remote garage opener, too.
This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology.

Many Seniors find themselves frequently receiving unsolicited and unwanted mail,
merchandise and emails.  If you believe that you’re a victim of fraud related to the
U.S.  Mail, including mailed sweepstakes, lotteries, on-line auctions, work-at-home
scams or chain letter. Report your concern to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service
as mail fraud.  The U.S. Postal Inspectors investigate any crime in which the
U.S. Mail is used to further a scheme - whether it originated in the mail, by telephone,
or on the internet.  The use of the U.S. Mail is what makes it mail fraud.

Consumer advocates and law enforcement officials are issuing new warnings
about a scam that targets E-Z pass users.  Here’s how it works:

You get an e-mail that flags you for having an unpaid toll or fine.  You’re then
baited to provide credit card numbers and other personal information, sometimes
by clicking on a link in the e-mail. Some of the scams are quite convincing. 
They come with the official logo of E-Z pass and a message saying that you owe
money and that you had better pay it.  For anyone who gets one of these messages
and has a question about its validity simply contact the issuer of your E-Z pass to
see whether you actually owe anything.  If you get one of these e-mails and fall
victim to the scam, contact the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center

Phone Scam   -   Do Not Press 90# for Anyone!
A senior received a telephone call from an individual identifying himself as an
AT&T Service Technician who was conducting a test on the telephone lines.
He asked the senior to touch nine (9) zero (0), the pound sign (#), then hang up.
The senior was suspicious and refused.  Upon contacting the telephone company,
she was informed that by pushing 90# you give the requesting individual full
access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls
billed to your home phone number.  She was further informed that this scam has
been originating from many local jails and prisons.

   The following e-mail was received from a friend of a Saugus senior.
“Good morning, how are you doing? My regrets for this sudden request.  On our trip
to Istanbul my family and I got mugged and all of our belongings, cash, cell phones,
and credit cards were stolen at gun point. It is such a traumatic experience for me.
We need your help flying back home as I am trying to raise some money.
The embassy has issued me a temporary passport but I have to pay for a ticket and
settle my hotel bill. I have made contact with my bank but it would take 3-5 working
days to access funds in my account. The bad news is my flight, it will be leaving
very soon and I am having problems settling the hotel bills. The hotel manager
won’t let me leave until I settle the bills. I only have access to the internet. I need
your help financially and I promise to make the refund once I get back home.
You are my last resort and hope. Please let me know if I can count on you.”

The Saugus senior called this friend at home and found out that it was all a hoax
and a scam.  Somehow the scammers got their email addresses.

Lottery and Sweepstakes Scam

The scammers inform the senior that they have won a lottery or sweepstakes and
need to make some sort of payment to obtain the supposed “prize”. After the
payment is made, the senior is often sent a check that they can deposit in their
bank account. The scammers know that while the deposit shows up immediately
in the senior’s account, it will take a few days before the fake check is rejected.
During this time the scammers (criminals) will have quickly pocketed the money
you sent for the “prize”. The senior has the “prize money” removed from his/her
account as soon as the check bounces.

Wiring Money Scam 
Keep in mind that wiring money is like sending cash:
once it is gone you can’t get it back. Con artist often insist that people wire money,
especially overseas, because it is nearly impossible to reverse the transaction or
trace the money.  Don’t wire money to strangers, to sellers who insist on wire
transfers for payment, or to someone who claims to be a relative in an emergency
(and wants to keep the transaction a secret).

“The Grandparent Scam”

The Grandparent Scam is so simple and devious because it uses one of older adults’
most reliable assets, their hearts. Scammers will place a call to an older person and
when the senior answers the phone, they will say something along the lines of,
“Hi Grandma, do you know who this is?” When the grandparent guesses the name
of the grandchild the scammer most sounds like, the scammer has established a
fake identity without having done a lick of background work. Once “in” the fake
grandchild will usually ask for money to solve unexpected financial problems
(overdue rent, payment for car repairs, etc.) to be paid via Western Union Money
Gram, which don’t always require identification to collect. At the same time, the
scammer will beg the grandparent, “please don’t tell my parents, they would kill me.”
Unless you are 100% sure that you are speaking to your grandchild, Do Not
Forward money by electronic means.

Tip-Offs to Rip-Offs: 
If you hear these - or similar-“lines” - from a telephone salesperson,
just say, “No thank you,” and hang up the phone.
“You’ve been specially selected to hear this offer.”
“You’ll get a wonderful free bonus if you buy our product.”
“You’ve won one of five valuable prizes.
“You’ve won big money in a foreign lottery.”
“You must send money right away.”

Don’t play a foreign lottery.
It’s easy to be tempted by messages that boast enticing odds in a foreign lottery,
or messages that claim you’ve won.   Inevitably you’ll be asked to pay “taxes”,
“fees” or “customer duties” to collect your prize.   If you send money you won’t
get it back, regardless of the promises.   Also, it is illegal to play foreign lotteries.

Guard Your Personal Information
If someone requests your personal information, always verify their identity before
providing it to them. Ask for their name, address, phone number and what organization
they are representing. Confirm their information through an outside source, such as the
company’s website or a telephone directory. You may be contacted by credit card
companies or banks if they notice unusual transactions or suspect someone else of
using your account, but in these cases financial institutions will never request account
numbers or other identifying information.  They already have them.  Rather they will
only inquire about specific usage.

Parking Lot Safety
When you look into the rearview mirror to back out of a parking space,
you notice a piece of paper stuck in the middle of the rear window.
So, you shift into park, unlock your doors, and get out of your car
to remove the paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view.
When you reach the back of your car, the carjackers appear out of nowhere,
jump into your car and take off. 

They practically mow you down as they speed off with your car. 
And guess what ladies?   Your purse is still in the car. 

So now the carjacker has your car, your home address, your money and your keys. 
Your home and your identity have been compromised!

Beware of this new Scheme.   
If you see a piece of paper on your back window, just drive away and remove it later.
