RETIRED MEN’S CLUB - WHERE MEN ARE MEN
Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month
at 9:30 am at the Saugus Senior Center
Meetings last one hour and feature a speaker of note.
We are going to continue on our once a month schedule for a while
until our guys get back from Florida.
The March meeting is scheduled for the second Tuesday of the month,
March 9th at 9:30 am at the Saugus Senior Center.
Two representatives of the Saugus Police Department will speak about
one of their current programs.
”You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”
Membership in the Retired Men’s Club continues to grow at a steady pace.
Dues are $3.00 for one year or two years for $7.00
All retired men and those who wish they were retired are invited to attend.
The main purpose of the Club is to provide good fellowship and sociability for
the retired men of our community. Just come on down.
Coffee and donuts are available. We are always pleased to welcome visitors.
Fire Chief Jim Blanchard was a recent speaker. He was without a doubt on of the
most interesting speakers we ever had. He has a great sense of humor but at the
same time he delivers a powerful message about the fire service.
Steve Spano is best described as a Board Certified Senior Law Attorney.
Steve was our February speaker and did his usual outstanding job.
Over the years Steve has proved himself to be a good friend of the Men’s Club
and of the Senior Center.
We continue to have excellent speakers and presentations at our meetings.
In early October, a representative from the New England Emergency Response Systems
explained their emergency safety program. They install equipment that best suits the
needs of elderly seniors living alone. You wear a lightweight, waterproof help button on
your wrist or around your neck. In an emergency, a push of the help button activates the
system connected to your phone line. Instantly, an operator is checking on you. Help is
available immediately. Overall, it was an excellent presentation.
We also were privileged to have a presentation by a representative of the Melrose Wakefield
Hospital. Head Nurse, Dot Cronin went to great length explaining the hospital’s program
dealing with hip and knee replacements. It sounded quite interesting and worthwhile.
This was also an excellent presentation.
“If you can’t be funny, at least be interesting.”
“What we do for ourselves dies with us:
What we do for others remains and is immortal.”
Copies of my new book,
“Where Men are Men or How to Be the King In Your Castle,”
are now available.
Dick Barry
We continue to have excellent speakers at our meetings. Susan Brown,
a Registered Nurse with the Greater Lynn Senior Services was a recent
speaker. She proved to be a very interesting and informative speaker.
She spoke at length on the subject of men staying healthy at 50+.
She outlined the daily steps needed to maintain good health.
She distributed literature that very clearly outlined the “Dos” and “Don’t”.
At the end, I really felt we all were better off for having listened to the
presentation. She was warmly received by the large group in attendance.
When you become a Senior Citizen, one fact is clearly constant, “Time Flies.”
On that note, I’m sitting here realizing that this starts the sixteenth year that
I have been writing this column.
“The day is lost in which one has not laughed.”
One of the reasons so many people come to the Senior Center and
participate in organizations such as the Retired Men’s Club is because
they enjoy the camaraderie and association with nice people. My personal
experience is that every time I enter the Senior Center, I generally receive a
warm friendly reception and everyone appears to be in a good frame of mind.
If you have a friend or relative that would like to check us out, but they are a
little nervous about coming down to an unknown group, tell them to ask for
Dick Barry and I will do my best to make them comfortable.
SPECIAL ALERT:
Seniors, spread the word. We need your help and support.
“Lord, thou knowest better than I know myself, that I am growing older
and will some day be old. Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking that I
must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release
me from craving to straighten out everybody’s affairs. Make me
thoughtful but not moody, helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of
wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all, but thou knowest Lord that I
want a few friends at the end.
Amen.
A SIGNIFICANT HAPPENING
Our hard-working, dedicated, admired woman in the front office who has
faithfully served the senior citizens of Saugus retired as of March 1, 2009
Frances Rigol can best be described as a “Pioneer” who helped bring our
Senior Citizen Program to the level that exists today. It should be noted that
she clearly was a part of the gang that worked so hard in the struggle to
build the new Center. She was able to work shoulder to shoulder with the
best of us.When I try to describe her finest category, I don’t know why but
the words, “Hearts and Flowers” clearly comes to mind. The overall well
being of our seniors was always in the forefront of her thinking.
She will be missed.
