Letter to the Editor July 2010:

Youth Volunteers give back to community.
Two months ago Coach John Furey of the Saugus Wings AAU
Boys Baseball Team contacted Youth and Recreation Director,
Greg Nickolas and offered to help clean up a playground.
That was music to Nickolas’ ears knowing the state of the
playgrounds.  Nickolas stated “that it is people like this
that make a difference in our community”.
Thanks to the DPW Parks Department Director, Joe Attubato
and Town Manager, Andrew Bisignani for providing the
necessary resources.  Biggest thanks to our coaches and boys
of the Saugus Wings AAU team for providing the manpower.

The Youth & Recreation Department would like to thank Tom’s Bait & Tackle
for choosing this department to donate funds that they have raised in their
shop and during the Take a Kid Fishing Day to go towards the S.A.L
(Saugus Athletic League).  They have always been very thoughtful and
generous to the community.  We want to acknowledge them for their generosity
and kindness.  We were able to be involved with the Take a Kid Fishing Day
and see what a great event this is for families.  Jen & Tom Falasca do such a
wonderful job and we are lucky to have them in our community!
Del
, the Owner
of the Dunkin Donuts at
Essex Street
on Rt. 1 has always been so generous
when we need help.  He donated coffee and donuts for all who attended the
Take a Kid Fishing Day.  Also, we can not thank Vicky Wiegman, the Manager
at Banana Splitz enough for the generous donation of 100 free ice creams for
the kids that participated in the Fishing Day.  It is people like this along with
businesses that bring the community together.

sfd50.jpgHello, this is a letter to the Editor;
I would like to extend my gratitude to Captain Nolan & the Saugus Fire Department.
Their prompt response to the fire at the Youth and Recreation Building and their
professionalism prevented what could have been more substantial damage.
Also, thanks go out to Det. Lt. Ronald Giorgetti, Ralph Matarese and the
building crew for showing up on their day off to make necessary repairs.
I am proud of my fellow employees that we have in this town.

Sincerely, Gregory Nickolas, Dept. Head Youth & Recreation

The Youth & Recreation Department would like to thank
Tom & Jen Falasca the owners of Tom's Bait and Tackle
for their generous donation towards the department for our
Youth Programs.
Tom and Jen began the "Take a Kid Fishing Day" five years
ago, to promote the joys of fishing as well as quality family
time.  Tom's Bait and Tackle funded the entire event, with
prizes and snacks donated from local sponsors.  As the
event grew, so grew the sponsors.  As they put it one good
deed deserves another.
And the community is lucky to have such good people in it!
Sincerely and greatly appreciated,
Gregory Nickolas, Director

The Saugus Youth & Recreation Department would like to thank

We appreciate the PTO for thinking of this department which is always
in need and this of course will help support the Youth Programs.

Saugus Youth & Recreation 2009 Anna Parker Cleanup
On April 18th, a Saturday morning, people and families came to help
and give their support and volunteer their time to help clean up the
Anna Parker playground along with Mark Andrews a concerned

A Big Thank you to all who showed up to help.

3saugusannaparker.jpg 4saugusannaparker.jpg

Also, thanks to the Town Manager Andrew Bisignani and
DPW
for getting
the materials ahead of time.  Director Gregory Nickolas says "In times of
financial difficulty this is what it's gonna take to keep our playgrounds safe
and clean for our children."
6saugusannaparker.jpg
Thanks to  Bob Macinni & Brian Churches
co-owners of Water Works Lawn Sprinklers
for responding to a last minute plea for help
from Youth and Rec. Director Greg Nickolas
and using their bobcat to help distribute the
mulch.  Children were shoveling the sand in
the sand box.  Diane Vecchione a parent
and park neighbor worked hard doing long
overdue trimming of hedges and bushes.
Steve Burke a grandparent & long time
Saugus resident
came down to lend a hand.

5saugusannaparker.jpg debbie_nickolas.jpg

Mothers and fathers with their children wheel-barrowing mulch and sand, raking and
helping out to clean up the park helped make this a great success.  It looks great and
we hope to keep it that way.  Hopefully this was a rewarding and learning experience for
the younger ones who helped clean up the park. We hope that in the future this will help
prevent them from wanting to cause damage.
