Saugus Substance Abuse Recovery Coach Program
The Town of Saugus has implemented a substance abuse recovery coach program
to provide help and support to those struggling with addiction and to help them get
into treatment programs.  Town Manager Scott Crabtree has said that he is confident
that the community can collaboratively help combat, and ultimately manage, the drug
problem facing Saugus and surrounding cities and towns.

Jeannie Meredith, chair of
Saugus United Against Substance Abuse (SUASA), the
non-profit organization created under the collaborative, adds that she believes that the
Winnisimmet Regional Opioid Collaborative’s Recovery Coaches program will help
those who are struggling with substance abuse get the help they need to begin the
recovery process.  The Winnisimmet Regional Opioid Collaborative is a regional
partnership formed by the communities of Saugus, Revere, Chelsea, and Winthrop.

The collaborative launched the recovery coaches program after receiving a grant
through the
Massachusetts Opioid Addiction Prevention Collaborative (MOAPC).
The grant was funded through the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services (BSAS).

A community-website assessment of the four cities and towns in the collaborative
helped launch the
Caring Collaboratively Web Portal that is designed to provide
resources to substance abusers and their families and friends.  The portal lists
contact information for recovery coaches within each of the four communities.

Recovery coaches must complete a 5-day training program at the Recovery Coach
Academy (RCA). They learn the principles and philosophies of recovery coaching,
and the purpose, tasks, and roles of recovery coaches.  They gain knowledge of co-
occurring disorders, medication assisted treatment, and the Stages of Change and
their applications.  They also learn how to create and develop wellness plans and
learn about ethical issues that could arise while coaching.

Training is sponsored by the
Massachusetts Department of Public Health,
Bureau of Substance Abuse Services
, and AdCare Educational Institute, Inc.

Saugus currently has two recovery coaches, Dawn Gaffney and Sopeep Bou.
Gaffney can be reached at (781) 485-7003  or

Bou can be reached at (978) 473-0122  or

Crabtree thanked Greg Nickolas, Jeannie Meredith and Julia Newhall for their
efforts in launching this essential program.   And he expressed his appreciation
to the town’s first responders and emergency personnel for working together
with the WROC to make this program truly effective.

The terrible thing about an argument
