The Saugus Youth & Recreation Mat Dogs recently competed
in a wrestling tournament at Chelmsford High School. Approximately 600 youth wrestlers participated in this tournament.
18 local youths represented Saugus and made the town extremely proud.
The youth program went 37-15 for the day.
16 wrestlers competed in the novice division and two competed in the select division.
Saugus took home 10 first place finishes and 3 second place finishes.
The first place winners were:Mikey" bones" Howard at 3-0 with three pins,
Donovan Clark at 3-0, Dougie Clark at 3-0, Salvatore "the bull" Franco at 3-0
with two pins, Nicholas Franco at 3-0 with three first period pins,
Tommy St. Cyr at 3-0, Sean Hebert at 3-0 with three first period pins,
DominicDecrencenzo at 3-0, Joe Alba at 3-0, Tommy Falasca at 2-1,
Shane Meredith at2-1, William King at 2-1, Ethan Graylin at 2-1.
Isaac Graylin at 0-2 with a bye in one round losing two tough matches, one
went into overtime, Zachary Cummings went 0-2 with a bye in one round.
The youth program went an astounding 35-8 during this tournament.
Due to the waiver recently passed for Saugus varsity,
7th and 8th graders can now compete at the varsity level.
7th grader and varsity wrestler Mike Titus went 1-2 at the novice division.
7th grader and varsity wrestler Anthony Trang went 0-3 in the select division.
6th grader Danny McCullough, wrestling varsity, went 1-2 in the select division.
Two years ago the Saugus Youth & Recreation Department started
the youth wrestling program.The first year we had 15 youth wrestlers,
the second year it grew to 30 wrestlers.Now we are 40 strong and still growing.
I would like to say how proud the coaches and parents are of these kids.
A special thank you to coaches Chris Howard, Dougie Clark, and Tommy Falasca.
I would also like to thank sophomore wrestler Brandon Milton who donated
12 hours of his Sunday to help coach.
I am also grateful to the parents who showed up to support Saugus Youth Wrestling.
Youth & Recreation Director, Greg Nickolas, would like to express his thanks
to the coaches and parents that help make this program outstanding.

for their recent donation of $255.00 toward the S.A.L (Saugus Athletic League).
Hannaford recently held a company-wide cookout event to raise money for local
organizations. We appreciate that they designated our department as a recipient.

like to thank Modell's Sporting Goods and Hannaford’s for donating their time
and for their generous donation towards our S.A.L. Program which we run for

Saugus Youth Wrestling 2nd Season April 7, 2011 Saugus Youth Wrestling successfully completed their 2nd season recently with an in-house dual meet.The group of 40+ wrestlers ranging in age from 7 to 14 were
grouped together by weight and competed against each other.All participants
received a tee shirt and medal along with a pizza party afterwards.
This program was taken over this year by the Youth and Recreation Department
and has grown in numbers from 15 to 45 kids.The program is for all children
regardless of height or weight.Kids are taught the basics of the sport along with
the conditioning, discipline and sportsmanship it takes to compete.We expect this
program to grow rapidly in the next few years and become a feeder program to the
Saugus High School team.
High school coach Rudy Howard would like to thank his dedicated youth coaches,
Darren McCullough, Chris Howard, Doug Clark and Tom Falasca for their hard work
and dedication to the program.He would also like to extend a big thank you to Greg
and Deb Nickolas for their overwhelming support in providing us the resources to
grow the sport of wrestling in Saugus.We would also like to thank Rich Garabedian
of S.C.T.V. for the coverage they have provided us.Last but not least thanks to
Phil & Tracy Franco and J&M’s Italian Specialty for their support.
The Saugus Youth and Recreation Department would
