Saugus Democratic Town Committee Hosts Governor and Candidates

Governor Deval Patrick stopped by the January 31st meeting of the Saugus Democratic
Town Committee to talk with members and guests about important issues facing the
Commonwealth. He answered questions about the federal stimulus payments, pointing
out that Massachusetts has met every federal deadline and is one of the top 10 states
to develop projects funded from stimulus monies. Four thousand new jobs will be created
to construct a waste water facility and funding will be used for road projects that improve
access to developments in Somerville and Dedham.

Governor Patrick pledged his continuing support for education reform and healthcare and
his commitment to “clean” technology and improvements in infrastructure while achieving
a balanced budget. He asked for our support in the upcoming election so that he can
continue the work he feels so passionate about, giving back to the state that has given
so much to him.

In addition to the Governor, the SDTC hosted several candidates running for office.
Former Secretary of Labor, Suzanne Bump asked for support in her campaign for
State Auditor. She feels strongly that government should have a role in developing
individual and economic opportunities.
State Senator Thomas McGee was also present to announce his candidacy
for re-election and mentioned his continuing interest and advocacy for
veteran’s services, an area where Mass leads the nation.
Damian Anketell will be challenging Frank Cousins for Sheriff of Essex County.
He is an advocate of community outreach programs to help combat substance
abuse and domestic violence.
Democratic candidates running in the special election to fill former Senator
Galluccio’s seat each spoke about their backgrounds and interest in public
service. Current Everett City Councilor, Sal DeDomenico, is most interested
in creating and saving jobs. He supports the moratorium on any additional
burners at RESCO and the development of the former Eastern Tool property.
Michael Albano of Chelsea, is the son of former state senator, Sal Albano.
He spoke of the need to renew our faith in government and has a background
in small business management.
Marjorie Decker, a current Cambridge City Councilor for the last 10 years is
a graduate of the University of Massachusetts and the daughter of a disabled
Vietnam veteran. She is a strong supporter of elder services and creating jobs
at the prevailing wage.
Tim Flaherty is from Cambridge and was an Assistant District Attorney for
Norfolk County. Also concerned with job development, he has an interest in
preventing substance addiction and providing rehabilitation to those affected.
The Committee’s next meeting will be held Sunday, February 28, at 7:00 pm
in the Doc Dumas Center of Laurel Gardens.
