Over the first two weeks of August, Lieutenant Ron Witten and

Sergeant Mike Stewart of the Saugus Police Department took 40

Saugus 5th graders to the Essex County Summer Day Camp. The

camp is held in Salem, MA at the Collins Middle School and while

there, the kids learn of the dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. High school

age teens work as peer councilors assisting the police officers in discussions

about drug resistance and confidence building.

They also get to go to the Danvers High School planetarium, bowling,

the Franklin Park Zoo and on the final day see a movie at Hollywood Hits.

This is the 5th year that Saugus has attended this camp along with the

following communities, Salem, Danvers, Ipswich, Marblehead, Swampscott,

and Lynn.

A great time was had by all.

"Take a Kid Fishing" Day Saturday, June 7, 2008 at Camp Nihan was a

great success.  More than 100 children turned out

to participate in the 3rd Annual "Take a Kid Fishing Day".

The event, co-sponsored by Tom's Bait and Tackle and

Saugus Community Policing, invites parents to take a child

freshwater fishing at Camp Nihan.

Tom's Bait and Tackle provides free fishing rods, bait, bobbers and hooks for

all, on the first Saturday in June each year.  The event is part of a nationwide

effort to encourage a love of fishing in young people.  Each year, the state

waives the required fishing license so parents can introduce their children to

the sport.

This year's big winner was Kendal Leahy, 4, who pulled in nine fish to win a

fabulous pink tackle box.  Cameron Pozark and Jake Blaney tied for the

largest fish - each hooking a bass that weighed in at 2.2 pounds.  For the

second year in a row, prizes were all donated by Dick's Sporting Goods.

Refreshments were provided through the generosity of Dunkin Donuts on

Essex Street, J & M Pizza, Shaw's Supermarket, Stop & Shop, and the

Fox Hill Yacht Club.   Next year's event will take place on Saturday, June 6th.
