The Saugus Women's Over 30 Softball League season
came to an end on August 23 after 3 nights of outstanding games
that culminated in another championship for SCT Tickets.

Game one paired second place AJ Simboli Real Estate against third place Kowloon.
Kowloon, not intimidated by the real estate brokers, racked up seven runs in the first
two innings.  Capitalizing on two errors, Karyn Salines-Alves produced the tying run.
Jeanette Laft then knocked in two runs giving Kowloon the lead that they never
relinquished throughout the game.  Marqeaux Wilcox singled in another run to give
her teammates a three-run lead, 4-1. Juliane Swansey, April Deluca (1 RBI), and
Melanie Baker (2 RBI) each contributed to the three runs in the second inning for
the restaurateurs, 7-1. AJ Simboli scored a run in the first after Patty Imperato reached
on an error and Rosie Kyes drove her home with a hit. Neither side scored in the third
inning, but the balls heated up again in the fourth. Kowloon’s Jennifer Elliot sent one to
left, Swansey reached on a fielder’s choice before Heather Irber cleared the bases with
a three-run homer to break the game wide-open, 10-1. Simboli countered with three of
its own on a single by Imperato that led to Rodriguez reaching on an error before Kyes
doubled in Imperato, and Ellen Giannusa connected on a two-run single to trim the
deficit to six, 10-4. In the fifth, AJ Simboli scored again as a walk, and an error scored
Carmen Gonzales. Kowloon’s offense quieted through the rest of the game but Simboli
wasn’t giving up. In the bottom of the seventh, AJ Simboli scored runs on two errors and
two walks but that was all they could muster. Final score, 10-7. Kowloon then advanced
to play the winner of first place SCT Tickets and 4th place Melrose FamilyChiropractic.

SCT Tickets and Melrose Family Chiropractic squared off on a beautiful evening at
Waybright School Softball Field August 22. Melrose stepped into the batter’s box first
and faced Lisa Lucas on the mound for the tickets. The game proved to be a pitching
duel with Chris Hofman in the hill for Melrose. Both pitchers with the help of defense
kept the runs to a minimum. Melrose was the first to score in the third inning,
Linda Ayala double to left and Colleen Fahey singled her home, 1-0. The pink shirts
of SCT Ticket struggled with Hofman delivery until the fourth inning when Jennifer
Woodland got things going with a single. Amy Dunn followed suit with one of her own.
Chris Bonia walked then, Cheryl Marotta sailed one to center field that allowed
Woodland to tag up and score, 1-1. The middle of the tickets batting order got their
act together; Tonya Chadwick singled, Patty Carey walked, then Suba Courchesne
single was the game winner, 2-1. Carey’s defensive coverage playing short field
resulted in key outs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Phyllis Boyd of Melrose
stabbed a sure hit in leftfield to stop a late threat. Hofman held SCT Tickets to only
seven hits and struck out two. Lucas picked up the win relinquishing just six hit and
striking out two. SCT Tickets advance to the championship game against Kowloon.

Title on the line, family, friends, and softball fans surrounded the Waybright School
field for the championship. It was a clear and calm night and fit for a ball game
on August 23. Kowloon’s April Deluca started the game with a base hit.
Lisa-Marie Brown RBI immediately doubled her home to put the purple in the lead,
1-0. Jennifer Elliot delivered the pitches for Kowloon and held SCT scoreless in
the first. But in the second, Sue Courchesne, Patty Carey, and Tonya Chadwick
all singled to load the bases. Nancy Lightbody reached on a fielder’s choice as
Elliot fielded a ground ball back to the mound and made the play to home. But
Penny Virgin grounder to first allowed Courchesne to score pink’s first run.
Mary Carney doubled in two more to give the tickets the lead, 3-1. Both Elliot for
Kowloon and Lucas for SCT settled in to rhythm posting zeroes through four.
Top of the fifth, Kowloon strung together two hits, a single by Marqeaux Wilcox
and a RBI triple by Karrie Babo cut the deficit by one run, 3-2. Heather Irber made
a tremendous catch in the bottom of the fifth at short stop to slow the momentum
of the tickets. Top of the sixth Kowloon had a runner on first but could not advance
her. In the home half of the second, SCT Tickets put an insurance run on the
books as Karen Sudbey singled and Cheryl Marotta skied a double that scored her
with their fourth run of the game. The game was hardly a runaway. Kowloon’s last
chance was at hand of Melanie Baker who singled to left, but was tagged out on a
fielder’s choice. Lucas delivered her final pitch and struck out the side which ended
the game. SCT Tickets take the championship once again. Elliot went the distance
on the hill, keeping her teammates in the game, while allowing 10 hits and one
strikeout. Lucas picked up her twelfth win on the season, giving up just 6 hits and
two strikeouts. SCT Tickets took home the championship trophy, once again.

** MELROSE FAMILY CHIROPRACTIC
WINS THE 2012 ONE~PITCH TOURNAMENT **

swot-2012-1pitch-winners.jpg

Saugus Women's Over 30 Softball League season concluded this past weekend
with the annual One~Pitch Tournament.  All five teams, families, and friends
gathered at the Waybright Softball Field for a day of food, fellowship and speed
softball.  It would not have been a SWOT event if a bit of rain did not bless the field
causing a 45 minute delay.
Kowloon defeated Eastern Bank in the first game of the day.  Melrose Family
Chiropractic beat AJ Simboli Real Estate, then Kowloon quelled SCT Tickets in the
third game.  Game four started the loser bracket play which saw AJ Simboli Real
Estate bring an end to the day for bankers.  Melrose Family Chiropractic's second
game had them up against Kowloon in their third game of the day. The green shirts
of Melrose were again victorious.  With one lose each, AJ Simboli Real Estate and
SCT Tickets squared off and the pink shirts of SCT knocked AJ's red shirts out of
the tournament.  SCT tickets now had to play Kowloon again.  The loser is out and
the winner moves on.  Just like their earlier game this one was a close one and
Kowloon exceeded the tickets by a run and stayed in the tournament.

With no loses, Melrose Family Chiropractic confronted Kowloon, the purple shirts
would have to defeat Melrose two times in ordered to come out on top. Melrose
took the lead by two runs early in the game, Kowloon waited until the seventh
inning to to knot it up forcing the game into extra innings. The teams battled back
and forth in a marathon race until team green scored a run in the 12 inning came
up as WINNERS of the One~Pitch Tournament.

Thanks for watching and reading, see you on the field next season.
